Words that move.

Pulp studies how words move people. Sometimes that means making them move. On screens, how a word arrives changes how it reads.

Downloaded fonts stay still, as fonts should. You add motion on the web.

  1. metal type

    For centuries, type stood still.

Letters were cast in metal and locked in place. A word looked the same every time.

  2. the 1950s

    Film taught words to perform.

Title designers like Saul Bass made letters slide and land, setting the mood before the first scene.

  3. screens

    Screens made words respond.

Words appear as you type, change when you tap, and say what's happening now.

  4. 2016 onward

    Fonts learned to change shape.

Variable fonts hold many weights in one file, so a word can thicken or thin as you watch.

  5. now

Now motion is part of the type.

Motion is a design choice now, like weight or spacing, and people raised on screens read it fluently.

Five hundred years, standing still. Then the letters learned to move.

Try it

Make your words move.

Pick a motion, tune the timing, take it to the web. Write on replays each house font's real strokes; Typo Nib and Typo Textura use a broad nib. The studio does the same for your letters.

Motion

Four rules for words that move.

Motion is a typeface's tone of voice. Give it the same discipline as the rest of the craft.

Say the word, don't decorate it

If motion doesn't change how the word reads, it's just busy.

End on a still that reads

Every motion ends on a clean still, which is all you see with motion off.

Time is spacing

Letter delay is spacing. Too tight, they crowd; too loose, the word falls apart.

Practice it

Presets are the white belt; timing, easing and per-letter delay, the black. Mastery takes time, even at speed.

Draw it once, and it moves on any screen. The font itself stays still.

In the studio

Animate your own letters.

Everything you draw can move. On the last step, open Make it move and export an animated SVG, HTML and CSS for live text, or one typodojo.js line. Saved motions wait on Your fonts.
